The Afghanistan Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India have confirmed a three-match T20I series between the two sides, set to be played in Delhi. According to cricketworld.com, all three matches will take place at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium, with Afghanistan playing as the home team.
The series is scheduled to run from September 13 to 17, 2026. The opening match will be played on September 13, followed by the second game on September 15 and the decider on September 17. Every fixture will be staged at the same venue in Delhi.
This series forms part of Afghanistan's Future Tours Programme. Afghanistan have often based their home fixtures in India and the UAE in recent years, and this series adds to that pattern of hosting matches away from home soil due to ongoing circumstances in the country.
The announcement comes just months after India and Afghanistan met in a Test and ODI series in June 2026. With this T20I series added, the two nations will have now faced each other across all three formats of the game within the same year, continuing what has become a regular bilateral cricketing relationship between them.
BCCI officials welcomed the development, describing the growing ties between the two boards and noting the popularity of Afghan players among Indian fans. One board official said the rivalry between the sides has produced "some thrilling encounters over the years." Afghan board officials also spoke about the series as a step toward strengthening cooperation between the two cricket boards, both on and off the field.
There has also been discussion around adjusting the schedule slightly to work around the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which falls on September 14, close to the second match date. Broadcasters for the series are still being finalized. The confirmed September window means India's earlier proposed white-ball tour of Bangladesh will not go ahead as previously planned.
With Afghanistan's spin-heavy attack expected to pose a challenge in home conditions, the series is being seen as an important test for both teams ahead of future assignments later in the year.
